Pet Owner – Piece of Gum

With every guitar chord struck in Piece of Gum, we approach the outlines of a long-suppressed secret. The fourth single from Pet Owner’s new album Second Nature carries a driving, restless energy, as if the nostalgic power chords stand for all the words left unspoken. 

And since those words rarely just „magically disappear“, she guides us through the consequences of holding them back. With her typically silky, airy voice, she lets the inevitable explosion unfold at a distance, carried by simmering synths and distorted guitars. 

Like a brief pause to catch your breath, the line “dreaming of screaming my truth” feels wonderfully arranged as a sudden space that opens up. A short moment to imagine what it might feel like to screaming one’s truth.
